We're Hiring!

Paid Farm Internship, Summer 2022

Little Salmon Farm, Parish NY

About Us: We are a small, family-owned, diversified farm in Central New York, about 30 minutes north of Syracuse. We produce a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, pasture-raised chicken and pork, and maple syrup that we sell directly to consumers through our farm stand and local farmer’s markets. While we are not certified organic, we use primarily organic growing practices including integrated pest management, cover cropping, deep compost mulching, and rotational grazing. Our mission is to provide delicious, high-quality produce to our local community in a sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion.

Job Description: We are seeking a part time field hand to join our team during peak production season (June through September). Typical tasks include seed starting, transplanting, cultivation and weeding, harvesting, pruning and trellising tomatoes in our greenhouse, cleaning and packaging produce, stocking and maintaining our farm stand, caring for livestock (chickens, pigs, sheep), and interacting with customers. Our farm is a dynamic environment that changes rapidly with the seasons, so every day you could be learning and doing something new. While we often work in pairs or teams, you may also spend periods of time working on tasks alone (great for lovers of audiobooks and podcasts.)

Requirements: Our ideal candidate is someone who is interested in sustainable agriculture and the environment and enjoys working outside in the fresh air and sunshine. No farming experience is necessary – first generation farmers and members of groups underrepresented in agriculture such as women, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC folks are encouraged to apply. This is a great opportunity for someone who is hoping to start a farm of their own.

Additional requirements:

  • Age 18+, preferably a college-aged student or recent graduate

  • US citizen or resident authorized to work in the US

  • Fast and efficient, with attention to detail and an eagerness to learn

  • Willing to work outside in a physically demanding job in all weather (heat, cold, rain, snow etc.)

  • Able to lift 50+ lbs comfortably and repeatedly

  • Comfortable working both in a team and independently

  • Dependable and reliable, shows up on time ready to work

Hours and Compensation

  • Part time, approximately 32 hours/week. While this would likely be four 8-hour days during the week (Monday-Friday), hours and days worked are flexible and can be adjusted to your schedule.

  • $13.20/hour

  • 30 minute unpaid lunch, regular paid snack and rest breaks

  • Please note that on-farm housing is not available – must be able to commute (approx. 30 minutes from Syracuse, 40 minutes from Oswego, 45 minutes from Watertown)

  • Start and end date: approximately June 1st – September 1st 2022, although dates are flexible to accommodate your school/life schedule. There may be opportunity to extend into the fall season (through October 31st)

To Apply: Email a resume, contact information for two references, and brief cover letter explaining why you’d like to work with us, what your strengths are, and what you are hoping to learn to Ellen at littlesalmonfarm@gmail.com. Deadline: May 15th 2022, though applications are accepted on a rolling basis and we may hire someone before this deadline.
